Governor Siminalayi Fubara has been urged to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) by the party Rivers State chapter.
The APC claims that it will accept him if he decides to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Speaking to Punch on Tuesday, Rivers APC Chairman Emeka Beke said that both Fubara and the APC would gain from such a move.
Beke claimed that the APC would gain more influence and visibility in the state’s governance as a result of Fubara’s defection, speaking through his chief of staff, Chizi Enyi.
His comments coincide with rumours that Fubara might join the APC as part of a political deal to end the ongoing crisis in Rivers State, which resulted in President Bola Tinubu suspending him. “Yes, we will welcome the governor,” Beke stated in the interview.
Is there anything we can do? The APC will gain a tactical edge in Rivers State if the governor joins the party. He pointed out that funding and involvement in state operations are frequently difficult in states with a governor who does not belong to the ruling party.
He naturally assumes the role of state party leader since he is the governor of Rivers State. Additionally, this would enable the APC to play a significant role in state programs and operations,” he continued. Beke added that he would be willing to give Fubara advice on how to enhance state governance.
He clarified that although the opposition APC had previously refused such advice, if the governor joined the party, the dynamic would shift. “As an opposition party, we possess the necessary skills to assist the governor in surpassing his current performance.
As part of our ideology, however, we have retained our recommendations. If the governor joins us, we’ll open our hearts to him and offer input on how to improve the lives of Rivers people and others residing in the state,” he said.
