Nigerian police officer demands N5,000 or five litres of fuel from a traveler who is unable to provide documentation of his Electronic Central Motor Registry (ECMR) registration.

On social media, a video of the incident has since gone viral. A group of travellers travelling the Benin Bypass were confronted by the officer in the video, who insisted on seeing their ECMR documents.

Following intense public outcry, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police, suspended the ECMR registration requirement in 2024. Numerous Nigerians had accused the police of extorting car owners by abusing the policy.

One of the travellers was heard telling the officer that the ECMR enforcement had been suspended and was, thus, unlawful in the widely shared video.

But the officer was unwavering, saying “You can make call now,” the traveler said, alluding to the idea of reporting the incident.

The officer brashly demanded five litres of fuel when the group asked, “What do you want us to do?” He also added, “We’ll go and buy it, that’s 5k.”

“You want five thousand from us all, abi?” One of the travellers enquired In response to the video, Delta State Police Command spokesperson SP Edafe Bright posted on X to denounce the officer’s actions.

“My God. I appreciate you recording this. All of the moles will eventually be eliminated from the system. One by one, these police officers who are dishonouring us will be dismissed from the organisation.

When they lose their jobs, they might start creating content. The force is on it, and this is embarrassing.
