The Niger State Government confirmed the recovery of two more bodies on Sunday, June 1, bringing the total number of fatalities from the devastating flood in Mokwa Local Government Area to 153.
Abubakar Usman, the Secretary to the Government of Niger State (SSG), announced this in a statement released by the government in Minna.
According to him, there have been 153 confirmed deaths as of June 1, 2025. “Many homes and individuals have been impacted by this regrettable disaster, and the government is unwavering in its commitment to helping impacted families and communities,” the statement read.
“To provide relief to the affected people, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) continues to work around the clock in cooperation with volunteers and local authorities.”
“We urge members of the public to remain calm and sensitive in their communications, particularly on social media and other platforms,” the statement continued, adding that the government shares the suffering of all the impacted families.
“As a state, we are in a period of mourning and collective grief, and disseminating sensational or unverified information only serves to exacerbate the already existing sadness and confusion.”
The government urged everyone to trust the ongoing response efforts and work with the appropriate authorities.
The SSG also urged all Nigerlites to put compassion, unity, and truthful reporting first during this trying time.
The statement also said, “May the families of the deceased have the strength to cope with the loss and may the souls of those who passed away rest in peace.”
