Two men, Chidi Onyendi (47), and Kalu Maduka (76), have been charged by a Chief Magistrate Court in the Aba South Local Government Area with conspiracy, stealing a transformer worth N14 million, and threatening community leaders who reported the incident.

Magistrate Erinma Maduagwu, who presided over the case at Magistrate Court 1, granted the defendants N500,000 bail each, along with a three-year tax clearance certificate and a surety who had to own a home within the court’s jurisdiction.

The Commissioner of Police filed a three-count charge under Charge No. MAS/85C/2025, which was follow by the followed by arraignment.

The accused and others who are still at large allegedly plotted to steal a brand-new, 300KVA transformer worth N14 million at Egbelu Iheorji in the Aba South Magisterial District on or before May 1, 2025, according to court documents.

The charge claims that the stolen transformer, which was meant for the community’s power supply project, has since been found and is presently being held by the Nigeria Police Force’s Aba Area Command Headquarters.

According to the charge, the offence is punishable, among other things, by Section 516 A(a) of the Criminal Code Cap 80 Laws of Abia State, Nigeria.

The complaint names Uche Emmanuel, an executive member, Uzoma Cheta, the chairman of the Landlords and Tenants Association, and community leaders as complainants.

The prosecution claimed in Count III that the defendants threatened the complainants, threatening to launch a vigilante group against them in reprisal for calling the police.

The victims were allegedly terrified and panicked as a result of the threats. Although many Egbelu Iheorji residents are demanding that the case be fully prosecuted, the matter was postponed to June 19, 2025, for additional hearing.
