The Headies, who organise the premier Afrobeats award, have come under fire from Nigerian singer Shallipopi. He swore he would never again go to such a gathering.
This follows a humiliating experience at the 17th edition in Lagos on Sunday. When his song “Cast” was declared the winner of the Best Rap Single of the Year award, Shallipopi, who had lost the hotly contested Next Rated category to his frequent collaborator, Odumodublvck, felt reassured.
However, the organisers apparently ran out of award plaques halfway through the ceremony, so when the presenter arrived on stage to accept his award, he merely shook hands with Shallipopi.
On his X page on Monday, Shallipopi discussed the humiliating event and promised to no longer attend the award ceremony. He stated that since he doesn’t see himself as a rapper, he didn’t even want the Best Rap Single award.
He pleaded with the organisers to award it to the category’s “real rappers.” “The next one if una see me make I bend,” the musician wrote.
“I don’t want that award, and I won’t even lie for Una Sef.
” Let the real rappers know what category they belong to. I am Shallipopi, and I am not a rapper.
