Nigerian author and filmmaker Arese Ugwu has spoken out about how the streaming behemoth Netflix severely harmed her by declining to collaborate with her on a larger scale.
The 39-year-old author disclosed that in order to produce her 2021 TV series, she had applied for sponsorship from Netflix.
The streaming behemoth rejected The Smart Money Woman, despite her popularity on the platform and Africa Magic. The rejection nearly broke her, she explained.
“We were able to produce Season 1 of The Smart Money Woman and got a fantastic reception on Africa Magic and Netflix,” Ugwu stated in a recent interview with Afropolitan. For 13 weeks, we ranked in the top 10 on Netflix. Then, in an attempt to expand and improve the project, I asked Netflix for sponsorship, but they surprisingly declined.
I nearly broke after that rejection. Ugwu also mentioned her ambition to become a well-known director rather than merely a writer whose work has been made into a movie.
“My goal is to become a well-known filmmaker. She said, “I feel like some people still think of me as the girl who wrote a book that was made into a television show.”
